How close can you come to winning a Group 1 race at your first attempt?

Mr Sneaky showed his tenacious ability yesterday at Caulfield in the $500K Group 1 Rupert Clarke Stakes over 1400m, running second whilst just getting run over in the shadows of the post!

In his first attempt at Group 1 level, Mr Sneaky was flushed out on the point of the turn, hitting the lead at the top of the straight, and having to withstand all the challenges down the entire 350m of the Caulfield straight. It did look like he could hold them off, until the effort took it's toll in the last 50m , and he was run over by his stablemate Santa Ana Lane.

What a tremendous effort it was for Mr Sneaky, in a race that was run in a time only 1 sec outside the track record.

Mr Sneaky basically had to do it at both ends of the race, he sat 4th on the very fast early pace, and still had the strength to kick away from the pack and hold off all bar one of them, leaving behind him were Group 1 performers It's Somewhat, Lucky Hussler, Scales of Juctice and Tosen Stardom.

It was a brilliant training performance by Anthony Freedman and his team, quinellaring the Group 1 with his 2 runners, unfortunately the winner was not Mr Sneaky this time!

The Dreamers were screaming from the 200m when he was being hailed the winner, but it was not to be, however we were all very proud of his efforts!

He will now push on towards the $500K Group 1 Toorak Handicap on Caulfield Guineas Day in 2 weeks time, and we will again try to win that ellusive Group 1 race!
